Newark pest control

We are New Jersey's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Newark raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Newark pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Newark Raccoon Control Tip: How to keep raccoons out of a chicken coop
Do you think raccoons are cute? Wait until you see the death and destruction they can rain on a chicken coop. Under the cover of darkness, these masked bandits will cleverly break into your chicken coop to have a meal of a lifetime.

Asides from providing your birds with a place to lay eggs as well as roam, your chicken coop also helps protect them from predators. That's why you have to ensure that your coop is well-placed and designed such that access by a raccoon is impossible. In this post, we explore how to accomplish that.

Use Hardware Cloth
One rookie mistake chicken keepers make is using chicken wire. Sure enough, no chicken can break through chicken wire. However, a raccoon will rip through chicken wire, like they're ripping through a piece of paper. That's why it's recommended to use hardware cloth.

Check around your coop for potential entry holes and close them off with hardware cloth. Do not neglect to cover up small holes as raccoons can squeeze themselves through small gaps. Ensure that you replace any chicken wire with hardware cloth to keep your mind at ease.

Use Sophisticated Locks
Raccoons are highly dexterous; you'd be surprised at what they can do with their hands. If you use a simple wire in place of a padlock, do not be surprised if a raccoon opens up your coop door and kill your chickens.

By using a padlock with a key or a combination lock, you make it impossible for raccoons to gain access by fiddling with your lock.

Install a Coop Apron
If a raccoon can't break through your coop, then it'll try going under the coop. Raccoons are excellent diggers, and you have to take that into account. Surrounding your chicken coop with a coop apron will make it impossible for raccoons to get in from underneath your coop. This option is simpler and cheaper when compared to burying fencing material.

Deterrents
There are several strategies you can implement to deter raccoons from coming close to your chicken coop. Some to bear in mind include:

  • Lights
Raccoons are nocturnal creatures, and they avoid the presence of lights. By installing a light source around your coop, you illuminate the surrounding areas, and this makes it discomforting for raccoons to come close.

  • Repellents
You should also consider using raccoon repellents to drive away raccoons. Raccoons do not like the scent of ammonia. By placing ammonia-soaked rags around the edges of your yard, you can deter these nasty critters. But note that the smell of ammonia is also unpleasant to humans.

Guard Dogs
Humans have used dogs to protect other animals and properties for thousands of years. Why not do the same? But you first have to train your dog to keep predators like raccoons away. In many instances, the scent of a nearby dog is enough to scare off raccoons.

You also have to train your dog not to harm your chickens. If not, your dog could end up wearing your chickens out and killing them off just for sport. Raising your dog as a puppy with your chickens is the best way to train them for guarding livestock. Examples of dog breeds that are ideal for protecting chickens include Akbash, Pyrenean mountain dogs, Kangals, and Pyrenean mastiffs.

Make Your Yard Unattractive
If there's easy access to food and shelter on your property - regardless of the presence of a chicken coop - raccoons will find their way there. That's why you must make your yard unattractive to them. Make sure you seal off your trash cans to prevent access. Also, take your pet food inside at night and clear away crumbs lying around the floor surrounding your bird feeder. Ensure that you also trim shrubs, grasses and clear off other potential hiding spots.

Trapping
Trapping is usually the last resort when all else fails to deal with the problem. Ensure that you use a big enough live trap to capture the nuisance raccoon before it is relocated. The laws surrounding the capture and relocation of wildlife vary from district to district, so ensure that you inquire from your local wildlife authority so that you're certain you're acting within the confines of the law.
